Troubling Loss

If once is random, twice a coincidence, and three a trend, then four is flat out troubling. That has to be what the Reds front office is thinking--at least privately--about Edison Volquez.
For the fourth straight start, Volquez allowed a big first inning that played a large role in the Reds 7-6 loss to the Pirates Sunday. It means the best the Cincinnati can do is split the four game series come Monday's finale. But back to Volquez and his first inning troubles. He continues to miss location, hangs curveballs and refuses to pitch inside--especially with the fastball. After the four-run first, Volquez once again looked like a different pitcher, giving up 2 runs in four and two/thirds innings.
It leads you to think the problem is between his ears. While that appears to be the case let's remember after being named the Opening Day starter, he missed his first few spring training starts because of a visa problem which put him behind in his season preparation (throwing to minor leaguers is no substitute for spring competition). Whatever the issue is, Volquez needs to figure it out quickly. He's scheduled to start game one of the upcoming road trip in St. Louis against Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter.
Two Other Disturbing Trends...
For all the depth the Reds have in its starting rotation, only one pitcher (Bronson Arroyo) has gone seven innings. While that might not seem like much, those April innings can wear down bullpen arms come August and September.
Also, it was alarming to learn the Reds staff is second in the National League in walks allowed, behind only the New York Mets. It's an area this club needs to improve upon if it hopes to contend for the division title again.
You've got to think the returns of Homer Bailey and Johnny Cueto can't come quick enough for Dusty Baker and Walt Jocketty.

  1. Bailey looked great in his rehab start. Look forward to his return. Question is...who deserves to go down? LeCure probably, but what about when Cueto comes off? Leake goes back to pen? Good problems to have. The Reds need to pick it up here to finish homestand strong.

  2. Couldn't agree more with Mr. Trickle. But how are the Reds going to handle Chapman's problmems?
